Inventory
An object in possession seldom retains the same charm that it had in pursuit.
A balance is needed between austerity, preparedness, and access. I need tools for creation and research, but I can get by with far less than I first think I can. When I am in a pinch, though, it pays to be well stocked and adequately outfitted.
Acquisition
Tools and items should be chosen thoughtfully, and considered against both my beliefs and my values. Repair. Reuse. Recycle. Avoid shiny new stuff. Prefer tools that can be inspected and understood.
Guidelines for Acquiring New Items
Before acquiring anything, ask:
- Is it truly needed?
- What exact purpose will it serve?
- Is there an alternative already in the inventory?
- How much better will it make the end result, compared with what’s already here?
- Can it be made with what is on hand?
- Is it repairable? Can it be repaired with what is in the inventory?
- Can it be bought pre-owned?
- What are the environmental implications: production, transport, usage, end of life?
- What are the social implications: working conditions, political conditions, manufacturer ethics?
