A photo of a laptop in a dining room
Since I’m not doing any iOS work at the moment, I did something silly for my trip to Scotland and brought only a non-Apple laptop. So far running Fedora has been fine work-wise with an occasional WTF moment with its UI and especially with error messages. It’s been interesting.

And tomorrow I need to deal with the ridiculous amount of email that I’ve completely ignored for the last week.

A photo taken in Keith, Scotland
Production was shut down but I still had a lovely one-on-one tasting with a charming woman named Alice. I mostly drink single-malt so I learned a lot about blended whiskies.

Its been really cool seeing some interest (however small) around @theodore_app. Its been a while since I’ve announced something to the world (been mostly do behind-the-scenes stuff with my consulting) and I’d been piling the self-doubt on. Thanks for the kind words all!

I’ve been spending a lot of time on the administrative side of Theodore and it feels good. I gotten the unexciting bits done like continuous integration, localization, code sharing, and getting a test suite set up. I think all of this stuff will help me maintain focus with the sporadic frequency that I’m able to work on Theodore.

I just bought my first laptop in six years and my first non-Apple laptop in fifteen years. I’m both nervous, excited, and still very skeptical.

Topic:Photography

I’ve been getting back into photograph and, I’ve got to say, the new Lightroom CC is pretty great. I love having all of my photos everywhere while still having reasonably advanced editing tools without being locked into Apple Photos.

Been having lots of ideas around making an internet-connected thermal printer again. My daughter enjoyed it so much and I had a blast making it the first time. 🤔

Not just writing the copy for the page, although that is a good place to start if I’m stuck. Sometimes I’ll just start writing done my goals or jotting down any words or phrases I’d like to see in the UI.

When I’m facing a design problem, my instinct is always open my tools get to work. This is fine for small UI elements, like buttons, etc. but almost never works for larger pieces. You know what almost always helps move things along? Writing.

What a productive day. I guess I got some mental clarity after staring the highway for 9 hours yesterday. 🤷‍♂️

I’ve been working on a big side project lately and treating it much more like I do my client projects. This means roadmaps, issues & milestones instead of just coding with the wind. I’ve had much less self-discouragement with it, I assume because I see issues closed everyday.

Done it off and on over the years but I was recently reminded how valuable it is to remember what I was feeling during various bits of life.

Getting my portfolio together is always a depressing experience. So much stuff I’ve worked is either gone or never saw the light of day.

We read through a travel journal with our daughter of a trip we took her on to Ireland. It was expensive and not-at-all easy but so worth it

Exploring places to stay in Italy…should we explore or go with what we know. Its not how we roll but I think this trip deserves the latter.
